Non-governmental organizations have been partners of the United Nations Department of Public Information (DPI) since its establishment in 1947. Official relationships between DPI and NGOs date back to 1968. The Economic and Social Council in its resolution 1297 called on DPI to associate NGOs with effective information programmes in place and thus disseminate information about issues on the UN’s agenda and the work of the Organization. Through associated NGOs the DPI seeks to reach people around the world and help them to better understand the work and aims of the United Nations.
Rutgers University is one of 16 universities world-wide with affiliation as a United Nations DPI NGO. Rutgers was granted NGO status with the DPI in June 2009. The benefits of the affiliation to Rutgers University and its faculty and students are many and varied. Given that Rutgers University is one hour from New York City by train, Rutgers faculty and students have ready and easy access to the United Nations headquarter facilities. Rutgers is privileged to be an associated university with the UN and enjoys the myriad benefits described below; foremost among these is the direct connection between Rutgers and UN staff members from the NGO Section of the Department of Public Information which directs the NGO/university affiliation. The relationship between Rutgers and the UN is useful and rewarding as students learn about the UN agenda, obtain internship experience, and are afforded unparalleled networking opportunities.
