http://ecologies.rutgers.edu/ The 2009-2011 Global Initiatives biennial theme titled Ecologies in the Balance? provides a framework for the Rutgers community to critically explore, discuss, and analyze the environmental, ecological, political, social and cultural challenges facing our planet and communities. During the first year Rutgers will host a series of more than 70 events under the title Ecologies in the balance? Thinking through the crises. The theme, Ecologies in the balance? offers a unique opportunity to embrace diverse topics such as the social, political, and material practices of everyday life; human and nonhuman economic interactions with ecosystems; wide-ranging implications of climate change; discrimination and other forms of victimization, or the roles of collective advocacy and community actions. The theme provides also a forum in which to investigate the ways in which the meanings of “ecological” or “sustainable” are being redefined as a result of economic shifts, technological advances, resource misuse, environmental degradation, or power struggles in different areas of the world. Furthermore, the proposed programs will examine the ways in which these concepts are intertwined with discourses of gender, race, ethnicity, and nation. Through numerous lectures, film screenings, workshops and conferences the biennial focus allows us to explore the interconnectedness of human dignity, justice, and ecology, and to scrutinize the ways in which unequal power relationships and economic inequities affect individuals’ and collective senses of belonging. The series of events will bring to the campus many scholars, politicians, policy-makers, activists, and artists, and we hope that the Rutgers community will have ample opportunities to connect with visitors as well as with our own faculty and students participating in the program. |
