Mumbai, Nairobi, Cairo, Rio de Janeiro, Mexico City. Megacities. These are the "slumdog" cities of our time, sites of intense poverty and deprivation, ecologies of pollution and toxicity, places of struggle and bare survival. In this talk, Ananya Roy will present an analysis of global urbanism, paying particular attention to cities of the global South. Against apocalyptic renderings of the urban future, she will argue that the world's megacities contain new horizons of politics and new formations of social life.
