A documentary about the Roma women from the (Boyash) Roma community in the city of Orăştie, Hunedoara County, Romania, Red Poppies (2006 – 55 minutes) concentrates on the perspectives of Roma women themselves, as a marginalized population within a larger society undergoing its own upheavals, as women situated in a strongly patriarchal social structure, and as individuals  trying to understand their rights and opportunities within these contexts.

The documentary was filmed as part of Director Eniko Magyari-Vincze’s anthropological research supported by a grant from the International Policy Fellowship Program of the Open Society Institute.

Dr. Magyari-Vincze is a professor at Babes-Bolyai University, Cluj, Romania and director of the Centre for Gender Studies. Her teaching and research interests involve socio-cultural anthropology and gender studies.  She is a 2008-09 Global Scholar at the Institute for Research on Women.  She will attend the screening to present the film and to answer questions afterwards.

Lunch will be served.
